Experience a powerful work of art through the pages of this book.

This limited-edition artist’s book presents the series Untitled (Portraits of Martyrs) by Taysir Batniji, made in commemoration of Palestinian martyrs who were killed by Israeli forces during the Second Intifada between 2000 and 2001. This exceptional book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Taysir Batniji: No Condition Is Permanent at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, in 2022.

Winner of a 2022 AIGA 50 Books | 50 Covers Award for Design Excellence

This book was designed to provide an intimate experience with a powerful work of art. The double meaning of absence is explored through the negative silk-screened portraits on black that only become visible from certain angles, evoking the haunting memory of lives that have been tragically lost but are not officially recognised as such. The play of light transforms the absent facial features into unique and expressive faces that appear as the pages are flipped.

The paper chosen for the book is matte, black and tactile, with a skin-like feel and the images are reproduced with a glossy transparent finish. The cover has the same paper weight as the inside pages, which combined with the black thread sewn open-spine binding, create the sense of immediacy and fragility.
