Qatar Museums Hosts Engaging Educational Experiences for All Ages this September

Qatar Museums is hosting a diverse lineup of activities, including art workshops, book readings, drop-in sessions, teacher training sessions, and guided tours for families, adults, and children across selected museums this September

Qatar Museums will continue its vibrant public programme this September by introducing several new activities at the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ), the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Liwan Design Studios and Labs, and M7.

The National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) has an exciting line-up of activities planned for September, including themed tours of the museum and storytelling sessions.

  • Storytime: Angry Majid

2 September 2023 | 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Families and children under 12 years old are invited to attend this family bonding story session and listen to the story of the Angry Majid. After the session, children get to take home their own handmade memento from the activity. Email librarynmoq@qm.org.qa to reserve your space.

  • Family’s Exploration Journey

16 September | 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM (English), 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM (Arabic)

NMoQ is holding a guided tour geared towards families with children aged 6-9, which takes participants on an interactive adventure through the museum galleries and family exhibits. The tour will encourage children to actively enhance their knowledge of Qatar’s environment, heritage, and culture by using their problem-solving skills. To register, contact toursnmoq@qm.org.qa.

  • Memory Box

24 September | 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM (reserved for participants from Ehsan Centre)

28 September | 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM (for all members of the public)

Senior and junior participants (aged 15 years and above) will embark on a special journey to learn from each other by reflecting on the memories and stories being told in the museum. This knowledge-sharing between generations will bridge the gap between them and create meaningful connections. Following the tour, senior participants will join an artist-led workshop* to create their own memory boxes. Please note that this guided tour is held in Arabic only.   • Discovery Programs: Track and Trace

Weekly, Sunday – Wednesday | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

In this art workshop, school students (grade 4 – 12) will interact with Qatar’s history & culture in creative ways and through educational games. The workshop is held in English and Arabic. Please contact schoolsnmoq@qm.org.qa to register.

The Museum of Islamic Art is hosting a range of free workshops this September, including art workshops, story-telling sessions, and a themed family day.

  • Illustrating Islamic Objects

2 September | 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Teenagers aged 15-18 are invited to attend this art workshop at MIA. Participants will choose pieces from within the Museum of Islamic Art's collection and learn how to replicate them using paints, pastels, or markers. Email miaprograms@qm.org.qa to register your interest.

  • Family Day – Plants

16 September | 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Islamic art features plants, leaves and flowers in almost all kinds of objects - from carpets and clothing to metalwork and stone. MIA invites families to explore the variety of flowers and plants, learn how to identify them, and discuss what makes plants so special. This session is held in Arabic and English and is drop-in with no booking required.

  • Discovering Wood at MIA

24 September | 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Many of the objects in the MIA collection are made of wood - what is the benefit of using this material? What are its properties? 8–11-year-olds are invited to join MIA for a session looking close up at this beautiful material and take home a wooden decoration of your own. The workshop is taught in Arabic and English and is limited to 15 participants. For booking and enquiries, email whatsonatmia@qm.org.qa.

  • Planet Kids Club - A Library Book for Bear

26 September | 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

MIA is holding its monthly Planet Kids Club, for families with children aged 5-7 years old. The workshop involves different activities all created under an overarching theme of protecting our planet, and story time sessions dedicated to caring about our world, different arts and crafts and educational segments about museum objects. The workshop is taught in English and Arabic and is limited to 30 spaces. For booking and enquiries, email libarymia@qm.org.qa.

Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum will run a workshop on providing nutritious lunches for children, a sports club, writing workshop, and teacher training sessions.

  • 321 Healthy Lunchboxes

19 September 2023 | 4:00PM – 5:30PM

Are you a parent and looking to create nutritious lunchboxes for your little ones? Join our expert health coaches, Noora Al-Kuwari and Lolwa Al-Kuwari, as they guide you on how to prepare balanced meals that your kids will love. Please note that this programme is delivered in Arabic only.

  • 321 Sport Explorers

12 September | 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

A club for children who are looking to explore new interests and meet new friends. This hour-long session of fun and fitness focuses on different sports, and includes engaging activities and a story time session.

  • 321 Writing Competition for Schools

September – October | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

A writing competition for schools to encourage students to write about the positive impact that sports have had on their lives and its impact in society. They can write about the physical, mental, or emotional benefits of sports. This competition will give students a chance to share their passion for sports and develop their writing skills.

  • 321 Teacher Training

17 & 18 September | Arabic

24 & 25 September | English

The aim of this training is to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to self-guide their students through the museum galleries. Teachers who participate in this programme will receive certification, which will qualify them to lead their students on field trips to the museum.

Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art will host a shadowing programme for Grade 10 school pupils, and will continue to host guided tours and art workshops this September.

  • Mathaf Shadows

26 and 27 September | 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of museum culture through our Mathaf Shadow programme. Designed specifically for high school students and linked to the unit of Museum Culture from the visual art curriculum, this training provides hands-on experience in the role of a Museum Guide. This workshop is for Grade 10 students.

  • Family Guided Tour

28 September | 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Join this guided tour for families and learn about the world-class collection of modern and contemporary art from around the Arab world, housed at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. After the tour, children will be invited to participate in a drawing workshop inspired by the pieces in the gallery. Please note that this tour is only held in Arabic.

  • Art Lessons with Ismael Azzam

Every Sunday and Monday | 4:00 PM -7:00 PM

Join artist Ismael Azzam at Manara Studio – Mathaf for a new season of Art Lessons at Mathaf and learn techniques in portraiture drawing using pencil, charcoal, and paint.

Liwan Design Studio and Lab will host a printmaking workshop, which looks at Liwan’s unique building and its history.

  • Daftar: Remapping School Memories Project

14 September | 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

This workshop focuses on Liwan's building built in the 1950's that housed Qatar's first all-girls school, Banat Al-Doha, later renamed Umm Almo'mneen. The workshop will take a deeper look at the various architectural elements that make this building uniquely mid-century modern. Participants will analyse the school building through observation and documentation, contextualise their own childhood memories, and be introduced to printmaking through block printing. Each participant can expect to leave with a simple zine created during this workshop.

M7, Qatar’s epicentre for innovation and entrepreneurship in fashion and design will deliver a vibrant schedule of public programmes to engage the general public across the duration of the Masterpieces of Furniture Design exhibition.

  • Dr. Mateo Kries on Masterpieces of Furniture Design

8 September | 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

Director of Vitra Design Museum, Dr. Mateo Kries will hold a talk about how furniture goes beyond function and its reflection of social change, symbol of innovation and technological advancement. The talk will be followed by a curator tour of Masterpieces of Furniture Design. Space for the tour is limited to the first 25 people registered.

  • Home Styling

8 September | 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Learn more about interior design and styling with a local creative. This workshop will share design principles and interior styling tips for any budget.

  • Vitra Playhouse

16 September | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

In this workshop Children will be invited to tour the exhibition to learn about interior design basics and gain inspiration from the furniture pieces displayed. They will be given printed objects to create a full room.

  • How to Spot an original

27 September | 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM

This workshop invites the public and creatives alike to study in detail what exactly makes Vitra furniture truly iconic, and thus learn how to spot an original among the fake. Participants will be looking into the difference in construction, materiality, and durability.

  • 100% Cardboard

23 September | 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

In this workshop children will learn about Interior design and sustainability. They will be given cardboard to build a piece of furniture that is inspired by the exhibition and made of 100% cardboard.
