The Shelters project is inspired by Doha’s cricket-playing community. Drawing from the temporary safety spaces built for workers next to large construction sites, the installation comprises two structures that can serve as gathering and resting areas for communities participating in a game of street cricket. The structures are made of scaffolding that consists of metal pipes covered with synthetic mesh, equipped with wood benches and basic safety gear. The main structure is made of steel pipes, while the large surface of the external fabric is painted with atmospheric shades to merge the shelters into the surrounding urban landscape. Inside each structure there is a gathering space and a few wood benches for spectators.
The entire structure is removable and can be eventually transported and installed in a different location. The installation aims to use art and design to create a series of small landmarks that will positively help to shift the current perception of street cricket in Doha.
